    Impressions of Salem

    Inspired by “American Impressionist Childe Hassam and the Isle of Shoals”

    Salem Arts Associations’ 10th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition

    Juried by Austen Barron Bailly, The George Putnam Curator of American Art, Peabody Essex Museum

    For the tenth consecutive year, the Salem Arts presents a show inspired by a Peabody Essex Museum exhibition. This year we offer “Impressions of Salem”, a reflection of PEM’s “American Impressionist: Childe Hassam and the Isle of Shoals”.

    The exhibit will be displayed at the Salem Arts Center, 179 Essex Street on the pedestrian mall, Salem, Massachusetts. Open Thursday–Sunday, Noon–6 p.m.

    This has been made possible through collaborations with numerous local businesses and organizations including the Peabody Essex Museum and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

    Call for Art!

    Submit your art to Salem Arts signature exhibit. After visiting the PEM’s exhibit “American Impressionist: Childe Hassam and the Isle of Shoals”, be inspired to think about: What impressions do you have of Salem? What does Salem mean to you? What’s it like to paint outdoors, something that interests you? If you were to make an artistic statement about Salem what would it be?

    All media are accepted.

    Prizes will be awarded for Best of Show and runners up. Awards are given for 1st Prize (Best of Show) is $150, 2nd Prize (Excellence) is $100 and 3rd Prize (Honorable Mention) is $50.

    All juried exhibitions require a non-refundable entry fee for each submission of $5 for Salem Arts members and Creative Salem Members. $10 for non-members. Artists may submit up to three pieces.

    Artwork Take-In: Thursday, September 1st from 6-8pm and Saturday, September 3rd from noon to 2pm
    Dates of Exhibit: September 10-30, 2016.

    Opening Reception: September 10th from 6-8pm

    Impressions of Salem Juried Exhibit Rules and Regulations

    In an effort to maintain professional gallery practices, Salem Arts implements the following rules and regulations for its juried exhibits. We ask that potential submitters read and adhere to the rules, as we will not accept artworks that do not comply. Observing the following points ensures that your artwork will be exhibited in the best possible way.

    • All entries must be original works and not previously shown in a Salem Arts exhibit. Please be mindful of copyright infringements.
    • Copies and reproductions of original works of art, whether embellished or not, are not eligible for submission to juried exhibits. However, fine art prints such as photographs, lithographs, woodcuts, engravings, etchings, screen prints and digital works are acceptable as long as they are labeled as such and numbered as an edition.
    • Maximum size for all artwork, whether 2D or 3D, is 36 inches in any direction.
    • All works on paper, including photographs, must be framed. Glass and Plexiglas must be clean inside and out, unscratched and intact.
    • Works on canvas must be framed or have gallery-wrapped, finished edges with no staples visible. · Frames must be in good condition, free of scratches and loose corners.
    • Mats must be clean and smoothly cut.
    • A hanging wire must be firmly attached to the back with screw-eyes or D-rings, and the wire not exceeding the top of the frame. NO SAWTOOTH HANGARS.
    • Dust covers or other backing material must be clean and intact.
    • Artwork must be completely dry at time of submission.
    • Three-dimensional work must be stable on a flat surface or the artist must supply a stand.  


    Work accepted for an exhibition may not be substituted, nor will any be permitted to be withdrawn during an exhibition, except in extenuating circumstances and only with the approval of the Gallery Chair.

    • Entries will be reviewed at the time of submission to ensure adherence to the artwork condition rules of the exhibit.
    • Inclusion in the exhibit is at the sole discretion of the juror. The number of pieces included in the exhibit will depend upon the space available and the size of the artworks selected.
    • Salem Arts reserves the right to turn away any submissions that it deems inappropriate for our younger viewers or offensive in subject matter. Works with overtly pornographic, discriminatory or violent messages may be barred from submission.

    Statement of Responsibility

     All entries are left at the owner’s risk—Salem Arts is not responsible for any loss or damage to submitted artwork by any means whatsoever. Salem Arts  volunteers will take all necessary precaution in handling artwork.

    • Awards

      Three cash awards are given for 1st Prize (Best of Show) is $150, 2nd Prize (Excellence) is $100 and 3rd Prize (Honorable Mention) is $50.



      All juried exhibitions require a non-refundable entry fee for each submission of $5 for Salem Arts members and $10 for non-members. Artists may submit up to three pieces.

    • It is encouraged that all artwork on exhibit be for sale to support and encourage the growth of our creative community.
    • Salem Arts charges a 20% sales commission; the artist receives 80% of the listed sales price.
    • Checks to artists will not be written until an up to date W9 form is on file with the bookkeeper. Artists who need to fill out a W9 will be notified by the bookkeeper.

    Pick-Up of Artwork

    Artwork must be picked up on October 2. There is a one-week grace period for late pick-up. Any who has not picked up work will be charged a fee for storage.


    • The Gallery Chair must review and approve in advance any unconventional methods of display or hanging presentation.
    • Once an accepted piece of artwork is installed in a show, please do not ask to change its location. It is up to the Gallery Chair to place and hang artwork.

    The Fine Art Department at the Topsfield Fair is seeking submissions for the Professional Fine Art Division:

    Entry Forms are due on September 5th (Labor Day) and then the entries are to be brought to the Fairgrounds the following weekend, September 10th & 11th from 12-4:00pm. They can enter online or by sending in the form to the Fair's office. If you would be so kind to share this information with your members, I would be grateful. I figured it would be another way for them to display their work.

    Some information for the Division:

    • Artists are able to enter 1-2 pieces for the juried show and they should be no more than 48 united inches (height+width) and priced. 
    • There is a panel of two judges that review all work and will critique the winners
    • All work is hung, unless juried out by the judges
    • Artists also have the opportunity to put pieces in our Art Sales Room- 3 framed, 20 matted and 10 note cards/calendars
    • Artwork is to be picked up after the Fair on October 11th from 2-6pm
    • The Topsfield Fair does take 20% commission for all artwork sold for the Essex Agricultural Society

    World View

    Salem Arts Association is pleased to announce a special exhibition featuring Salem Arts members’ Photos of the world.

    What’s your “World View”? Salem celebrates a long and rich maritime history of exploring the world and returning with stories far and wide. Salem Arts Association invites all members to submit your photographs of the world.  Where have you been? What have you seen? This is an opportunity to share your images of the world outside this region we call home. This special exhibition will showcase a collection of photographs made by our membership and like the explorers of Salem’s past will bring home our visual stories from far and wide.


    This is an open call for art to all Salem Arts members.

    It’s Free! There are no submission fees for members.

    New members are welcome to join Salem Arts to submit work.

    Salem Arts members may submit up to three photographs for consideration in the exhibition. 

    Salem Arts members Karen Hosking and James Bostick will curate the exhibition with assistance from the Salem Arts Gallery Committee.

     “World View” will be on display at the Salem Arts Center through the month of August 2016.

    Members may deliver submissions on Saturday July 30 between 12:00 noon and 2:00 PM at the Salem Arts Center Gallery. Artist agreement and Standard inventory forms are required.

    An exhibition reception will be hosted at the Salem Arts Center Gallery on Saturday August 6th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

    ArcWorks invites artists from Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire to submit works for consideration to the juried exhibit 2016 Dog Days of Summer. Artists may submit artwork in a variety of two– and three– dimensional media for the juror’s consideration. ArcWorks’ juried exhibits are un-themed, and artists may submit artwork of any subject matter.

    Cape Ann Plein Air Competition and Festival October 10-16, 2016

    Come paint plein air where it all began!

    For nearly two centuries, Cape Ann (Massachusetts’ “other” Cape located 25 miles north of Boston) has been a destination for some of the finest painters who paint “en plein air.”  Throughout its four picturesque seaside communities, Cape Ann Plein Air will host a week long plein-air painting celebration in October when the famous Cape Ann light shines at its very best. Organized by the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, seARTS, and Cape Ann’s leading arts and culture organizations, the communities will see up to 40 of the finest artists in the nation compete for $16,000 in prizes and awards while raising awareness of all that painting en plein air is today. The work produced will be sold at the Grand Awards Gala on Saturday, October 15 at the Rockport Art Association & Museum.

    Application Process & Fees
    *    Entries will be processed by from April 8 - July 15, 2016.
    *    The non-refundable fee of $50 is payable when you apply online using a credit card or Paypal.  Unpaid applications will not be considered for selection.
    *    Print your receipt for your records.
    *    Submit 3 color images in jpeg format, RGB color.
    *    Submitted images should reflect recent plein air artwork.
    *    Eligibility: 18 years and older
    *    DEADLINE July 15, 2016.
    *    Entering Your Images:  Entry form must be filled out in its entirety.  List sizes up to the nearest half inch.  Submitted images must not include matting or frame.  Crop the photos to include only the artwork.  Be sure your images are right-side-up.

    General Regulations:
    *    Participation in the Oct.15 Awards Gala is required
    *    Artwork submitted for Awards must have been created en plein air, within the four Cape Ann communities, and without the benefit of photography between Oct. 10 - 15, 2016.
    *    All mediums are acceptable including oil, acrylic, and pastel.
    *    Artists are responsible for framing their work and bringing it to the display location. Must include hanging wire 
    *    All paintings must have the Cape Ann Plein Air 2016 stamp on the substrate.
    *    All exhibited artwork must be for sale.  Artists set their own prices. 
    *    All sales transactions are processed by Cape Ann Plein Air.

    Artists’ Plein Air Day at Cogswell’s Grant

    Saturday, May 21, 9 am –5 pm

    Calling all painters: come to Cogswell’s Grant for a day of plein air painting. Join fellow artists from all over the North Shore to paint beautiful vistas including the Essex River and the Great Marsh, farm fields and landscapes, and our eighteenth-century historic house and barns.

    Free beverages and snacks are available. Stay and tour the museum, which features one of the country’s most celebrated collections of American folk art.

    Enter our juried competition for digital art and photography. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. 
    All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. 
    The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

    The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44x60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper 
    (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery. 
    The exhibit will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

    Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24x36 inches 
    ($150-$200 in value) to be included in the winners' exhibits and opening.

    Salem has a new public art project: “Drain SmART Salem”. “Drain SmART Salem” will use artistic stormdrain murals to educate Salem residents about the connection between stormdrains and the ocean. Stormdrains empty rainwater directly into the ocean, carrying with it any trash or harmful chemicals from the street. Murals will be painted around drains on the sidewalk and street, incorporating environmental and ocean themes in a way that educates walkers and passing residents.

    The project is made possible through a collaboration between Salem Sound Coastwatch and the City of Salem Public Art Initiative.  

    "We are very excited about this project,” said Barbara Warren, executive director of Salem Sound Coastwatch. “Most people don’t know that trash from the street like plastic bags and cigarettes butts flow directly into the ocean through stormdrains.”

    “Drain SmART Salem” invites local artists to submit mural designs for review and selection by Salem Sound Coastwatch and the City of Salem Public Art Commission. Once selected, artists will paint their designs on stormdrain of their choice located throughout downtown Salem. Applications are currently available online at If interested in submitting a design or to request more information, contact Jack Nessen at or at 978-741-7900.
