Salem Arts Association is excited to close our 2017 exhibition schedule with a showcase of our member artwork. All current Salem Arts members are invited to bring on your best work. Lets show the community what we have to offer in all of our diverse styles and artistic disciplines.

Holiday Artists’ Market  at Salem Old Town Hall

Salem Arts Association in collaboration with the City of Salem Public Art Commission and Salem Main Streets invites local artists and artisans to participate in this year’s Holiday Artists’ Market in the Old Town Hall, 32 Derby Square, Salem, MA.

The Holiday Artists’ Market will be Sunday, November 26, 2017, from 10-5pm with spaces of approx. 8’x 6’ for juried vendors with their artwork and creations. Spaces start at only $60 rental.

    Applications for the 2016 Salem Arts Festival are now live! 

    The deadline for submission is set for April 8th, 2016.

    Now in its eighth year, the Festival will take place from June 3-5, 2016.  Thousands are expected to attend this free family-friendly festival which lights up Salem’s downtown corridor with an art show, street fair, and live performances. Last year’s festival welcomed over 5,000 visitors. All events take place in downtown Salem, within walking distance of public transportation.

    The 2016 festival will consist of:
    ·         a gallery of juried artists’ work in Old Town Hall
    ·         outdoor stage venues for performance and dance at Derby Square and Artists’ Row
    ·         a juried street fair on Essex Street Pedestrian Mall and Derby Square
    ·         this year’s collaborative public arts project – “Move With Me”
    ·         and much more!

    Artists selected for the Old Town Hall gallery will have an opportunity to sell their work at (with 20% of proceeds going to Salem Arts Festival).  All performers are given a small honorarium.

    Applications should be completed and submitted by April 8th via the Salem Arts Festival website,  

    While the festival prefers electronic applications, applicants are welcome to pick up and drop off hard-copies of the form at Salem Arts Festival/Salem Main Streets, 265 Essex St., Salem, MA 01970.

    The Salem Arts Festival is organized by Salem Main Streets and a collaboration of Salem organizations and volunteers, including Creative Salem, Salem Arts Association, Salem State University’s Center for Creative and Performing Arts, and the Peabody Essex Museum.  This program is supported in part by a grant from the Salem Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

    We're a non-profit group who's mission is to provide an inexpensive, indoor, market where fine artists and fine artisans can sell their work.

     We're a juried market and we assure a standard that is not crafts. With a space fee of only $35 we offer a 10 foot space in a 'gallery opening' setting complete with coffee, munchies, and a pleasant atmosphere. We've been operating since May of 2015 and our vendors have consistently been pleased, even on a slow day when it was near zero degrees out. Typical selling points have been between $20 and $400.

    We'd like to enhance our market with more fine artists that wish to sell their work. We're at 90 Washington Street, Haverhill, next to 'The Tap' restaurant in the downtown Cultural District. Here's our contact info for applications and information:

    Enter our juried competition for digital art and photography. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. 

    The competition is international, open to all geographical locations. The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44x60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery. The exhibit will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist. 

    Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24x36 inches to be included in the winners' exhibits.

    Deadline for entries: February 29, 2016
    Winners Announced: March 7, 2016
    Exhibit Dates: March 17-April 9, 2016

    Artists Reception: Saturday, March 19, 7-9pm

    Registration fee is $35US.

     Beyond Words: A Mixed Media Art Event 

     A Call for Art! The theme for SAA’s April/May 2016 exhibit is “Beyond Words: A Mixed Media Art Event”. To honor the Massachusetts Poetry Festival that takes place in Salem April 29-May 1, we have chosen incorporating words, verbiage or text into your mixed media art. Your work can have any theme, any use of materials, however there must be elements of words incorporated. Those words can be the central focus, an enhancement or simply an accent. Please note this is considered a “small works” show due to space limitations. Only works 11” x 14” or smaller can be considered. Be adventurous and share your work with the community! 

    Exhibit Dates: April 16 –May 15, 2016, during Salem Art Center hours. Accepted work must remain on view until the exhibit closes. Exhibition reception: Saturday, April 16, 6-8pm. 

    Exhibit Location: Salem Arts Center, 179 Essex St 

    Work Sought: All artists are invited to submit up to 3 pieces and should be professionally presented. 


    Size Limits: Small works show: 11” x 14” or smaller only. 

    Eligibility: Open to all artists 

    Fees: SAA Members: $5.00 fee per entry. 

    Non-Members: $10.00 fee per entry. 

    Artwork Drop-Off: Sunday, April 10th from 10am – noon and Monday, April 11th from 


    IN-PERSON DROP-OFF ONLY. Unsolicited mail will not be returned. 

    Acceptance Notification: Artists will be notified by e-mail if work is not accepted. 

    Work Not Accepted: Pick up on Saturday, April 16th from noon-2pm. 


    Sara has been exhibiting in the arts community of greater Boston for over 25 years. She has also been involved in a variety of arts community groups helping to promote and raise awareness of the visual arts. 

    She served as President of United South End Artists and after her term remained an Advisor to the Board. In this capacity she wrote a grant to fund the website for United South End Artists and another grant to promote the USEA on a year around basis. Sara served on the board of The Boston Open Studios Coalition a group that brought together all the Boston Open Studios art organizations to better promote Open Studios as a main cultural attraction in the city. Past memberships include: Brickbottom Artists Association, Cambridge Artists Association, Reclamation Artists, and LynnArts Inc. At LynnArts she served on the Gallery Curatorial Committee charged with reviewing proposals for exhibits as well as advising on juried shows for upcoming exhibits. Sara was also invited back to her alma mater Mass Art to be a part of a panel discussion and to jury the All School Show. She was part of a review panel at Boston Center for the Arts charged with reviewing proposals for their visiting curators program. 

    After moving to Salem she was instrumental in conceiving the first Open Studios event and in the renewed interest in reviving the Salem Arts Association where she served as a member of the Board of Directors. As co-director of Experimental Art Gallery and Studio she spent 3 seasons on Artists Row hosting many artists and wonderful exhibits while serving on the board of the Salem Cultural Council for two consecutive terms. She curated two exhibits at SATV in 2014 and recently returned from an A.I.R. program in Paducah Kentucky. She currently maintains a studio at Porter Mills. 

    Sara will decide the following awards for this show: Best of ShowExcellent Work and Honorable Mention


    What to Expect at Drop-off: 

    -Please bring cash or check to pay for your submissions. 

    -Please bring a signed copy of this Entry Form (page 2). 

    -Please use the below tags when submitting artwork – filling out BOTH sets. One will serve for our records while the other is to be affixed to your original artwork. 

    -Please cut down the middle of the tag page. The right side tags are for you to affix to your original artwork, the left side (UNCUT) is for our records. 

    -Please keep in mind May 21, which is your pick-up date for unsold works. It is preferred that artwork is not stored for any length of time as this is when/how damage can occur. Please make every effort to pick up your work (or have a friend pick it up) on time. 

    Commission Rates for Works Sold: SAA Members that have served a 3-hour gallery sitting slot during exhibit hours will receive 80% commission. If 3-hours were not served, then commission is 50%. 

    Non-members are not eligible to gallery sit and will receive 50% commission. 

    Final Pick-Up: Exhibit closes on May 15. Pick-up of unsold artwork on Saturday, May 21 from noon – 2pm. Artwork cannot be stored after 30 days (starting May 21) and will become property of SAA. 

    Liability & Agreement: By signing above, the Artist agrees to release, defend and hold harmless SAA, and all their officials and gallery volunteers from and against any and all losses, costs, damages, liability, or expenses (including any attorney’s fees) arising out of or resulting from any accident, bodily injury, property loss of the occurrences to any person or persons in service of this Agreement or any part thereof. SAA is not responsible for loss or damage and does not carry insurance on artwork/items. Insurance of artwork/items is individual artist’s own responsibility.

    ArcWorks invites artists from Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire to submit works for consideration to the juried exhibit Winter Wonders. Artists may submit artwork in a variety of two– and three– dimensional media for the juror’s consideration. ArcWorks’ juried exhibits are un-themed, and artists may submit artwork of any subject matter.


    Online submission: November 30, 2015 – January 22, 2016
    Hand-carried submission: Wednesday, January 27, 2016   1pm – 6pm
    Notification of inclusion / omission: January 28 – 30, 2016    
    Exhibition opening: Thursday, February 4, 2016   5 – 7pm
    Artwork pick up: March 14 – 15, 2016     10am – 7pm both days

    SAA has issued a Call for Art for 9th PEM Inspirational Show: Flux  based on the Peabody Essex Museum's Strandbeests.  

    Judged by Trevor Smith, Curator of the Present Tense, Peabody Essex Museum, the FLUX exhibit will run September 17– October 17, 2015 at 179 Essex Street.

    Take in is September 7, September 9, 4-8pm and September 12 from Noon to 6 pm.

    $5 entry fee for SAA members for up to 3 pieces.
    $10 entry fee per piece for non-SAA members.
    NO size limitations, but the pieces must fit through the door! We can accommodate sculptures and installations within reason.

    Trinity Financial is seeking artists who are looking to permanently showcase a piece of their art work within the new Enso Flats residential development located in the heart of downtown Brockton, Massachusetts. The art work will be displayed in lobby of the gallery at Enso Flats further adding to the renaissance currently taking place in the City.     Artists are invited to submit designs that will draw attention to the trash barrels at Salem Willows Park. The purpose is to prevent litter and trash from becoming marine debris. Selected designs will be painted by the artists on one "painting day." Paints will be supplied. This is part of Salem Sound Coastwatch's "Talking Trash for Clean Oceans" program.
