Artist Statement Workshop

Wednesday April 13,  6:30-8:30 PM

On Wednesday evening, April, the Salem Arts Association will be hosting a workshop on writing artist statements at the Salem Arts Center, 179 Essex St., Salem. The workshop will be led by Emma Thurgood.

The Artist’s Statement workshop will cover two topics: an Artist’s Biography and an Artist’s Statement. There will be discussion about how the two differ, but work in tandem, as well as what important things to include in each. There will also be an overview of the different content styles that can be used in each, and when first vs third person writing is appropriate. In addition to the items to include within the documents, there will also be a discussion with exercises on different techniques one can use to write a statement.

Emma Thurgood was raised in New England, but has traveled and lived all over the Eastern United States for work and pleasure. She returned to New England over a year ago as the new Business Manager for ArcWorks Community Art Center in Peabody, a program of the Northeast Arc. Before that, Emma worked as the Exhibitions Curator for Art Center Sarasota, a mid-sized visual arts gallery in Sarasota, Florida, and as an independent artist’s agent, connecting artists with opportunities. In her time, she has worked with artists of varying mediums, interests and career levels from across the globe. She received her BFA in Painting from Ringling College of Art + Design and an MFA in Studio Art from Memphis College of Art.

Registration required

Attendance to the event will be limited to 25 people. Attendees should bring writing materials and paper. It is recommended, but not required, for students to come with some sort of preliminary writing about their work. This can be in the form of a list of descriptive words, short phrases or sentences about the series or individual pieces, or quotes that inspired the work.
