The Bauhaus, created in Germany in 1919, was one of the most influential design schools of the twentieth century. Its teachers and students devoted themselves to rethinking the traditional approach to both the fine and applied arts and as a result had a profound impact on visual culture, which continues to this day. Bauhaus artists and designers celebrated individual craftsmanship and incorporated industrial design into works ranging from architecture to fine art painting to utilitarian objects. In this slide lecture, Karen Koehler, curator of the recent exhibition Bauhaus Modern at Smith College of Art and associate professor of architectural history at Hampshire College, explores, in particular, the language of mass culture and collage in Bauhaus posters and prints, photographs, architectural drawings, furniture design, theater and costume design, ephemera—including its reincarnation in Gropius House.

The Bauhaus and Mass Culture lecture is part of Historic New England's celebration of the 90th Anniversary the Founding of the Bauhaus in 1919. Through special programs, house tours, and more, discover Walter Gropius (1883-1969) who is known for his achievements in bringing forth a reformed school of art and architecture known as the Bauhaus.  Visit www. HistoricNewEngland.org for a complete listing programs and events at the Gropius House.
