    June Spotlight Artist Gary LaParl

Don't miss June's Spotlight Artist: Gary LaParl at the SAA Gallery on Artists' Row!

Many know Gary as the Executive Director of the Salem Theatre Company and as a glass artist. He's also a photographer.  Drop by the retail portion of the SAA gallery to see a display of his photography as part of the monthly SAA Spotlight Artist exhibit.

Gary describes his photography as "primarily based on nostalgic, natural and nautical themes. I love finding the significant in the insignificant — the beauty in the everyday objects we work and live with but don’t often stop to consider."

You can learn more about Gary's artwork on his website and on his SAA Artist Member profile page.

City of Salem seeking artists to participate in a public art project at Salem Willows

Proposals due: noon July 5, 2010

The City is requesting proposals from area artists to improve the visual appeal of concrete barriers placed at the end of Fort Avenue to separate parking from a sitting/passive recreational area at Salem Willows Park. Successful proposals will consider the placement of the barriers, the Salem Willows community, and Salem’s interesting, varied history.  There are 10 barriers at the site. Work should be site specific and able to be completed on site.

The selected artist will receive a stipend of $1,000.  The proposal should take into account the Salem Willows setting, improving the look of the area, and the durability of the materials and proposal, among other things.

Proposals are due to the City’s Park and Recreation Department at 5 Broad Street at 12 p.m. (noon) on July 5, 2010.  The proposal should be completed by August 23, 2010.
