American Dream – Member Show at Salem Arts Association Gallery
Salem Arts Association opens a new exhibition celebrating the theme “American Dream” at our gallery space at Pickering Wharf.
This members-only show invited artists to explore what the American Dream means to them, reflecting diverse experiences and perspectives, and the rich tapestry of the American experience
In honor of Pride Month, we encouraged submissions that highlight the intersection of American pride and LGBTQ+ identities, showcasing how the pursuit of happiness, freedom, and equality shapes our collective dreams.

Dollhouse by Shelley Alpern This work is an absolute delight to explore. Every detail—every nook and cranny—has been crafted with care and imagination. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, bringing to mind the beaded curtain I once wished for, the buzzer of a game of Operation, and the warmth of a family “den.” This interpretation of the American Dream feels both poignant and lighthearted at once. Viewers will likely find pieces of their own memories reflected here. |

Top Dog by Karen Hosking I was immediately drawn to the bold colors and playful shapes in this photograph. The vibrant reds and yellows, along with the rounded form of the trailer’s “bun,” create a vivid sensory experience—I can almost hear the “pop” of a hot dog. Despite not being a fan of hot dogs myself, this image is undeniably tempting. It’s energetic, engaging, and full of personality. |
An Authentic American by David LaChapelle The subject’s white braids, paired with her subtle smile and focused gaze, create a portrait that feels both intimate and powerful. Her symmetrical pose conveys calmness and composure, while also suggesting depth and thoughtfulness. This image invites curiosity—I find myself wondering about her story, what she’s thinking in this moment, and what came before and after. It’s a portrait that lingers and encourages connection. |
