Mankes and Ashodian are co-founders and directors of
Experimental Art Gallery & Studio, a seasonal art space in
Salem, MA. With similar sensibilities in vision and use of materials, the artists are kindred spirits; as they create art that incorporates the discarded remains of everyday life. Mankes and Ashodian were introduced in 2004 at artspace@16 in
Malden; at a group show they were both in; by fellow artist and gallery director, SandT. Re-meeting at Mankes' new gallery in
Marblehead the next year, the two formed a fast friendship, bonding through their similar views on life, similar sensibilities in their love of art, and their amazingly similar love and use of materials. They opened ‘Experimental’ in 2007, as they fondly call it, on ‘The Row’, (Artists’ Row
) in
Salem. In their second show together, their first at 'Experimental', Mankes and Ashodian feature recent works. Each artist explores alternative ways of seeing, through technique and the use of diverse resources; incorporating the detritus and uncovered remains that surround us all and are transformed through the artist’s vision.
Experimental Art Gallery & Studio is located in the heart of downtown
Salem, at
24 New Derby Street, at the corner of
Front Street (across from The Lobster Shanty). Parking is available in Klop Alley, directly adjacent to Artist Row. The gallery is a 5-minute walk from the Salem Commuter Line.
