SALEM, MA—The Salem Arts Association (SAA) is proud to announce its 6th Annual Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) Complement Show: Off the Top of Your Head, which will be on view from September 8 through September 30, 2012, at the Carriage Barn of the Andrew-Safford House on Salem's Washington Square. The exhibit will feature artwork inspired by the PEM exhibit, Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, and will be juried by Paula B. Richter, Curator for Exhibitions and Research at the PEM. The SAA is grateful to the PEM for the gift of the Carriage Barn as the SAA Complement Show's exhibition space for the second consecutive year.
The opening reception for Off the Top of Your Head will be held on Saturday, September 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. Live music will be provided by the Bad Actors. There will be a private reception on September 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The PEM’s Hats: An Anthology—a travelling show organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum of London—is a meditation on hats as works of art by British milliner-to-the-stars Stephen Jones. The show displays a multitude of creations for the head, from Sarah Jessica Parker’s lime-green fascinator to plumed bonnets and silk turbans.
This range of styles, from the bizarre to beautiful, will provide abundant inspiration for a vibrant complement show of artwork in an array of mediums. In addition to providing a thoughtful meditation on the PEM show, Off the Top of Your Head will offer a local perspective from the British roots of Hats: An Anthology.
