Salem Arts Association Opens New Gallery Space on Historic Pickering Wharf

Beloved nonprofit arts organization relocates to expanded waterfront location, bringing enhanced visibility and community programming to Salem’s creative scene

New Chapter for Salem’s Premier Arts Organization

The Salem Arts Association is embarking on an exciting new phase with the announcement of a gallery and shop opening at 88 Wharf Street on Pickering Wharf. The move marks a strategic expansion for the volunteer-run nonprofit, which has served as a cultural cornerstone in Salem, Massachusetts since incorporating in 2007.

After calling 159 Derby Street home since January 2020, the organization began searching for new premises when the building owner informed them of plans for the space beginning in mid-December. What followed was an extensive search through Salem’s competitive real estate market that ultimately led to an ideal waterfront location.

Prime Location Offers Enhanced Accessibility

The selection of 88 Wharf Street came after careful consideration of more than 15 different sites throughout Salem. According to Deborah Greel, President of Salem Arts Association, the Pickering Wharf location stood out for multiple reasons.

“The location is ideal,” said Greel. “It has so many positives — great foot traffic, street-level windows, accessibility, and a thriving group of commercial neighbors.”

The new space represents a significant upgrade in terms of visibility and accessibility, with expansive front windows that will showcase both exhibitions and the gallery shop to passing pedestrians and tourists exploring the historic wharf district.

Expanded Programming and Community Partnerships

The relocation brings more than just a change of address. Director Patti Baker emphasized the opportunities the new space creates for both members and the broader community.

“This move is already bringing new benefits to our members,” said Baker. “The new space offers expansive front windows to highlight exhibitions and the gallery shop. We’re planning a more robust education program and developing partnerships to host exhibits throughout Salem businesses. We’ll also open with a Member Holiday Showcase starting in mid-to-late November.”

2026 SEASON AND BEYOND

The organization has outlined an ambitious timeline for the transition:

  • Mid-to-late November 2025: Opening with the Member Holiday Showcase, featuring works from association members
  • December 2025: Continuation of the Holiday Showcase
  • January 2026: Gallery closure for minor renovations to optimize the space for artists and visitors
  • Mid-February 2026: Launch of the full 2026 exhibition season

Beyond the new gallery space, Salem Arts Association is actively pursuing collaborative opportunities throughout the city. A partnership with Salem State University is already in development, with additional discussions underway for pop-up exhibits at various Salem businesses.

Mission-Driven Arts Advocacy

Since its incorporation as a nonprofit in 2007, Salem Arts Association has maintained a clear mission: to bring art, in all its forms, to the community — and to bring the community, in all its diversity, to the arts. Over nearly two decades, the organization has produced hundreds of exhibitions, events, and workshops for Salem’s residents and visitors.

The all-volunteer organization has created a vibrant hub for artistic expression at its Derby Street location, hosting exhibitions, classes, workshops, and well-attended art openings alongside its gallery shop operations.

Supporting Salem’s Creative Economy

The move to Pickering Wharf positions Salem Arts Association within one of Salem’s most visited commercial districts, potentially increasing exposure for member artists while contributing to the area’s cultural tourism appeal. The enhanced street-level visibility and improved accessibility align with the organization’s commitment to making art available to diverse audiences.

The Opening Night performance of Salem Theatre Company's production of Tina Howe's comedy Painting Churches on Thursday, May 12 will benefit Salem Arts Association.  STC will donate half of the box office receipts that night to the Salem Arts Association.  The performance begins at  7:30 p.m. and all Salem Arts Association members and their friends are encouraged to attend and support SAA.  Tickets are $35 and available online at www.salemtheatre.com or can be held for pick-up at the door by e-mailing info@salemtheatre.com or by calling 978-790-8546.

This is a great chance for the SAA to raise the money needed to hire a gallery assistant for our upcoming season on Artists' Row. A sold-out performance means that SAA will receive over $800.

The play is about an artist on the verge of celebrity returning to her parent's Beacon Hill home to help them move to the Cape, and - hopefully - paint their portrait in the process.

Please help us to get the word out by sharing this with your family and friends in the area!
